Over the weekend, I finished up a decorating project at my home by the beach. Well almost finished up…I’m still waiting on a piece of furniture for under the tv on the wall and one piece of artwork that I can’t decide on. Truly…are we ever done?!? Homes area work in progress most of the time! I say the guest room is done because the room is liveable now and ready for company to come for a visit. Decorating my home brings me JOY and when you do things that bring you joy that is a form of self care. I’m always sharing was for self care and how to recharge your batteries. For some of us, decorating our personal space is just that!

The Kristi Jones Podcast - Creating a cozy guest room

Creating a cozy guest room takes planning, thoughtfulness and the art of whimsy so it feels like a relaxing retreat when a friend comes to stay. Creating a space you love to be in is a great start to a guest room your guest will feel right at home in!

If it’s time for you to welcome guests soon into your home or just tidy up your guest space, here’s a tip when you set up and decorate a guest room. Play guest for a day/night and stay overnight in the room. This gives you the true guest experience and can help determine if the space is usable, comfortable, if anything else needs to be added or taken away. I checked myself in to the guest room earlier last week for a one night stay. It helped me determine the finishing touches to the space over the weekend.

Things to consider when creating a guest room: Comfort of the bed, cozy bedding, pillow selections (firm and soft), throw blankets, textures of linens, lighting both overhead and lamps, privacy for the windows, reading space, easy access to plugs for phone and electronics, closet space, having items like books, pen, paper available and a low watt night light available for use if your guest should want that. If the room is inviting and relaxing, most likely your guest will unwind and enjoy a good nights sleep as well.

Our homes are like our personal sanctuary where we relax, unwind and recharge. Being thoughtful of how we create our space and what we allow in to help create the atmosphere of our home is key in building a home that is reflective of who you are and provides comfort and renewal for when you are home.

Here is a breakdown of sources for some of the items in this guest room:

  • Black metal daybed Living Spaces
  • Bedding from Home Goods
  • Lamp and side table from Wayfair
  • Curtains and pillows from Target
  • Boho wall shelf from Amazon home

Happy decorating and do what brings you joy!
