The Kristi Jones Podcast - Fitting in is overrated

Let’s chat real quick about fitting in, blending in or being to hung up on wanting others approval. It is a good survival skill for say a chameleon, you know the lizard that changes color with whatever background it exists in. There are animals that blend in to their environment to avoid being killed by a predator and I get that. Most of us aren’t living in a life or death scenario every day trying to survive the wild like the chameleon. I am talking about people like you and me, the human race and how the whole fitting in thing is overrated. I find fitting in, just for the sake of blending in and approval of others, to be a characteristic that can be suffocating, stifling and limiting. Your unique expression of who you are is what the world really needs.

I made a short post today on my social media about this topic because it resonates strongly in my heart. One of the reasons I love meeting people and being around people in general is experiencing their authenticity and pureness of who they are. I appreciate people that are not seeking others approval and living in their own joy and truth, whatever that means to them. The world needs each of us to show up each day and share our gifts and talents. If we spend our days always trying to be like someone else or buy into the messed up concept of doing or living in a way pleasing to others but not ourself, feelings of emptiness, dissatisfaction, unhappiness, or frustration can arise. I think that is a dangerous gamble to make when creating your life. The voice to listen to that really matters is what you hear inside of you, in your heart and soul.

RELATED: Hey Girl- Stop caring what they think and start living the life you want.

When it comes to seeking the approval of others, I have a few thoughts to share. Those that love and support you for who you are will show up for you and stand with you. You don’t have to get their approval to be the amazing, unique person that you are. When it comes to relationships or friendships based around meeting someones approval, or as I describe it, fitting into their box, I urge you to truly consider what that relationship will cost you in terms of your well being both mentally and physically. So laugh dance and sing whenever you feel like it. Who cares if someone judges you for it or thinks your too happy or goofy or whatever label they are wanting to stick on you. Their response or opinion is really more about them than it is about you so just get on with your day and do YOU the only way you know how.

Remember, not fitting in can be a good thing…a really good thing! Don’t put too much value on what others think of you. Their opinions of you are just that-opinions. It’s their right to have an opinion and it’s your right to ignore it if you choose to. Be bold and shine bright my friends and be the truest, unique expression of yourself each day.
