Switching Gears: Get Out of Park & Take Back the Driver’s Seat - The Kristi Jones Show Podcast

Life has a way of putting up roadblocks—heartbreak, career setbacks, disappointments, and loss. When challenges hit, it’s easy to lose control and drift through life. But here’s the truth: you have the power to take back the driver’s seat. Setbacks are inevitable, but staying stuck is a choice.

If you’ve been feeling unmotivated, directionless, or simply going through the motions, it’s time to take back control. This isn’t about waiting for the perfect moment—it’s about deciding to start the engine again and drive forward with intention.

Where Are You in Life’s Car?

Think of your life as a car. Where are you sitting?

  • Parked? You’re stuck, unable to move forward due to fear, self-doubt, or uncertainty.
  • In the passenger seat? You’re letting circumstances or other people dictate your direction.
  • Behind the wheel? You’re making intentional choices, navigating the journey, and taking ownership of your future.

Recognizing your position is the first step toward switching gears and moving forward.

Your Inner Narrative: The Stories You Tell Yourself Matter

The way you speak to yourself shapes your reality. Your brain is wired to seek evidence that reinforces your beliefs. If you constantly tell yourself you’re not ready, not capable, or not worthy, you’ll subconsciously act in ways that keep you stuck.

Instead, shift your inner dialogue:

  • Instead of “I always mess things up.” → Say “I learn and grow from every experience.”
  • Instead of “I don’t know where to start.” → Say “I’ll take the first step and figure it out along the way.”
  • Instead of “I’m too far behind.” → Say “Every day is an opportunity to move forward.”

Changing the narrative isn’t about ignoring reality—it’s about choosing a perspective that empowers rather than limits you.

Setbacks Happen, Staying Stuck is Optional

Painful moments are a part of life, but they don’t have to define you. When faced with setbacks:

  • Acknowledge the challenge, but don’t let it become your identity.
  • Accept that healing happens through movement—taking small, intentional steps forward.
  • Focus on what’s within your control instead of dwelling on what you can’t change.

You don’t have to park at the point of pain. Keep moving.

Intentional Living: The Key to Fulfillment

RELATED: Intentional Living – Create a Life You Truly Love

Success isn’t just about working harder; it’s about directing your energy toward what truly matters. When life feels overwhelming, ask yourself:

  • What am I saying yes to that’s draining me?
  • What do I actually want, and how can I move toward it?
  • Am I making decisions based on fear or alignment with my values?

Living with intention means actively choosing what serves you instead of passively accepting what doesn’t.

The Discomfort Factor: Why Growth Requires Stretching Yourself

Everything you want—confidence, success, fulfillment—is on the other side of discomfort. The hard truth? Growth requires stepping outside your comfort zone.

  • It’s saying yes to opportunities before you feel “ready.”
  • It’s making the tough choices that align with your long-term vision.
  • It’s facing uncertainty with faith rather than fear.

Personal example: My divorce was a defining moment that forced me to choose myself and take bold action, even when it felt terrifying. That decision led to a life I never imagined was possible.

Faith, Courage & Taking the First Step

You won’t always know every turn on the road ahead—but that doesn’t mean you should stay parked. Taking action, even when you’re uncertain, is how clarity comes.

  • Trust the process.
  • Stay open to guidance.
  • Take the next right step, no matter how small.

Your future isn’t waiting for the perfect moment—it’s waiting for you to decide to move forward. So, where do you want to go next?
